Poems
Stories (long/short)
Articles 
Ranticles
Photo poetry

Book reviews
Essays etc

General Guidelines

Send all submissions to upwritenigeria@gmail.com with the subject line “Category Submission/ Name” (i.e. “Poetry Submission/ Greene Rose”). In the email body, please include a short, third-person bio along with your attached submission file. We accept submissions from anyone from anywhere in the world. All submission must in Word document (.doc, docx) format only and align to the left margin.
All rights revert back to the author upon publication; however, we ask that you credit Upwrite Mag as the place where your work first appeared. We do not accept previously published work. We are unable to accept simultaneous submissions but we would respond within two weeks. Multiple Submissions are welcome (1 poem, 1 prose, 1 essay etc). We unfortunately cannot pay contributors. Not adhering to guideline would lead to automatic rejection.


CATEGORY  GUIDELINES

Poetry: Send 1 poem in Word document (.doc, docx) format only. Please title your documents with “TITLE by NAME” (“Blooming by Greene Rose”). (20 lines max)

Prose: Send 1 prose piece in Word document (.doc, docx) format only. Fiction, creative nonfiction, flash fiction, etc. Please title your documents with “TITLE by NAME” (“Blooming by Greene Rose”) (1500 words max)

Essay: Send 1 essay piece in Word document (.doc, docx) format only. Critical essays, Personal essay. Please title your documents with “TITLE by NAME” (“Blooming by Greene Rose”) (1500 words max)

  She was cheating on him. He had known the first night he heard her whispered voice, he had seen it in her jerky motions, but he had been sceptical, not wanting to read meaning into things. Now though, he was sure. The hour met with the minute and they both kissed 12:00 yet, no sign of her.  There was the car horn. He heard Musa open the gate, and quickly hurried outside, only to stop abruptly on his tracks. His wife was leaning heavily on a young man with a belly nothing like his protruding own. The lean man who was now closer still supporting his wife was saying something, but he couldn't understand what. His gaze was fixed at his hopelessly drunk wife. Nigeria and Nigerians are a strange lot, Ken Saro-Wiwa said that Africa kills her sun, I am wont to disagree. Perhaps, we used to do that in the past, not anymore. Today, we clinch to the superstars and ensure that they return to their father’s land to defend what is left of the country.  We do not do this in a bid to kill them, no, we do it in order to protect them. This was the same thing that happened earlier in the week when a report had it that some Nigerians were clamoring for the return of a particular United States of America sniper.                                    You would want to ask that on what grounds would Nigerians ask that a citizen and a soldier of the United States return to Nigeria. As always, the reasons are flimsy, ‘she was born in Nigeria’, ‘she is a native of Kano State’ amidst other thoughts that do not hold water.  Somebody commented that she should come back to defend her father’s land and I could not help but laugh.
